FAQs

Booking Your Charter

Charter yacht pricing is typically based on a seven-night (one-week) charter. However, some yachts also offer daily rates for shorter charters of four or five nights.

Short Charters

If your charter is shorter than four or five nights, a surcharge may apply. This varies depending on the yacht and destination.

Regional Differences

In the Mediterranean, yacht management companies generally prefer Saturday-to-Saturday weekly charters.
In contrast, the Caribbean offers greater flexibility, allowing guests to start and end their charters on different days to best suit travel schedules.

The Term “Bareboat”

Booking a yacht “bare” means you charter the vessel without a crew or skipper—you handle everything yourself. It’s a simple, hands-on way to enjoy full control of your sailing adventure.

What’s Included

Each yacht comes with basic provisions such as salt, pepper, minimal condiments, sheets, and pillows for every cabin. Many also include towels and basic snorkeling gear. Additional equipment—like water toys or fishing gear—can usually be rented.

Optional Skipper

If you don’t have certified boating experience, you can hire a skipper to assist or take command. Otherwise, you simply rent the yacht, stock up on provisions, and set sail on your own private journey.

Crewed Charters

A crewed yacht charter offers the ultimate in comfort and personalized service. Your permanent onboard crew manages every detail of your voyage—similar to a private villa or luxury hotel experience.

Exceptional Service

The crew ensures your safety and wellbeing while acting as your personal chef, steward, engineer, and deckhand. On larger yachts, you may also have dedicated fitness, water-sports, or dive instructors to enhance your experience.

The Captain’s Touch

Your captain not only navigates your route but also entertains you with fascinating stories from a life at sea. Every crew member is professional, friendly, and dedicated to creating a seamless, stress-free charter experience.

Enjoy a luxury crewed yacht charter in the Caribbean or Mediterranean—where service, comfort, and adventure meet on the open water.

After both you and the yacht’s agent or owner sign the contract, a deposit is required to secure your reservation. Once the deposit is received, your charter is officially booked.

Our Role as Your Yacht Broker

As your yacht broker, Out of the Blue Yacht Charters coordinates directly with yacht owners, management companies, and other charter agents to find the perfect yacht for your needs.

How Commissions Work

Yacht owners provide us with a commission from the charter fee for arranging the booking. This allows us to focus on securing the best yacht and ensuring a seamless experience for our clients without additional cost to you.

Client-Focused Service

Our role ensures that you receive professional guidance, access to exclusive yachts, and personalized support throughout your booking process, making your luxury yacht charter effortless and enjoyable.

Maritime Compliance

All charter yachts offered by Out of the Blue Yacht Charters comply with international maritime law and local regulations. These rules are strict, and local coast guards frequently inspect yachts, verifying paperwork, registrations, and crew certifications. Yachts that are not in order risk confiscation, and fines can be substantial. Most cruising destinations also require a Trade License or equivalent; yachts without proper documentation and insurance cannot obtain their annual license.

Crew Certifications

All crew members must be certified under the STCW 2010 (International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers). In some cases, valid work permits are required. Credentialed crew also undergo regular medical checks to ensure safety and professionalism.

Our Standards

Out of the Blue Yacht Charters attends international charter yacht shows in the Caribbean, USA, and Europe to inspect yachts and crew firsthand. Our detailed evaluations ensure every yacht meets our high standards before being offered to clients.

Charter Costs

Charter costs vary depending on the yacht type, location, and rate structure. Some additional expenses may apply, but Out of the Blue Yacht Charters ensures you receive a detailed list of all estimated extra costs—no hidden fees.

Itinerary-Dependent Expenses

Certain costs may fluctuate based on your itinerary and destination. By providing detailed information about your planned charter, we can create the most accurate and comprehensive cost estimate.

Get a Full Quote

The 12 Passenger Rule

Most charter yachts are limited to 12 passengers under international maritime law. Yachts carrying more than 12 passengers are classified as passenger transportation vessels and must comply with the SOLAS Convention (Safety of Life at Sea), enforced by the IMO.

Why It Matters

This regulation exists for passenger safety. SOLAS requirements are strict and expensive to implement, which significantly increases charter rates.

Charter Yacht Impact

Operating under the 12-passenger limit allows yachts to balance safety, comfort, and cost, providing an enjoyable and secure experience. This limit distinguishes standard charter yachts from vessels approved for larger groups.

What is APA?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is a fund provided to your captain to fully provision the yacht. APA ensures your yacht is stocked with fuel, food, beverages, and other essentials for a smooth, hassle-free charter.

How APA is Calculated

At Out of the Blue Yacht Charters, APA is typically calculated as a percentage of the contracted charter rate. The amount varies based on yacht type, itinerary, and onboard needs.

Sailing Yachts

For sailing yachts, APA is usually 15–25% of the charter rate, depending on your route, duration, and preferences.

Motor Yachts

Motor yachts often require a higher APA, around 25–35%, due to greater fuel consumption and additional provisions.

Catamarans and Monohulls

Many Caribbean catamarans and monohulls are all-inclusive and do not charge an APA.

Banking

The most common way to pay your charter rate and APA (if applicable) is by check or wire transfer to our U.S. business bank account. Your payment is then transferred to the yacht’s agent, secured in the agent’s escrow account, and paid to the yacht ten days before boarding. Before making a payment, you will receive a detailed explanation of the payment schedule in the currency of your charter rate.

Yacht Payments and Currency

Yachts and their agents are paid only in their local currency. Out of the Blue Yacht Charters generally cannot accept payments in a client’s preferred currency.

Currency Conversion Options

In some cases, exceptions are possible if you communicate with us in advance. Our bank can convert your payment from your preferred currency into the yacht’s currency.

Important Considerations

Be aware that bank fees for currency conversion may be higher than standard exchange rates. This process ensures secure and timely payments, allowing the yacht crew to prepare your charter efficiently.

Smooth Charter Experience

Using the proper currency ensures a seamless booking and provisioning process, giving you peace of mind and a stress-free start to your luxury yacht charter vacation.

Yacht Tracking & Schedules

All yachts represented by Out of the Blue Yacht Charters are registered with individual agents who keep us informed at all times. Even during long transatlantic crossings, we track each yacht’s location, weather, and wind conditions. Daily updates allow us to keep you informed about progress and estimated arrival times.

Managing Delays

Delays can occur due to mechanical issues or delivery schedules. We monitor potential disruptions before your departure and manage any necessary adjustments to ensure your charter runs smoothly.

Peace of Mind

Continuous monitoring and proactive coordination give you confidence that your yacht will be ready and your itinerary maintained as closely as possible.

Charter Agreement & Insurance

Please review your charter contract, as tracking and scheduling details are included. We also recommend trip insurance to cover unforeseen events—contact us for guidance on obtaining coverage.

Cash and Credit Cards

Most shops and restaurants accept debit and credit cards, and ATMs are available in many locations. However, it’s wise to carry some cash for taxis or small local expenses.

Caribbean Specifics

Across the Caribbean, the same rules apply throughout the Virgin Islands. In the BVI, ATMs are less common than in the US Virgin Islands, so having cash on hand is recommended.

Currency Notes

In the Windward Islands, you may encounter local currencies such as the Euro or East Caribbean Dollar. The US Dollar is widely accepted in shops, bars, and restaurants, making transactions convenient for most travelers.

Packing & Luggage

Storage on most charter yachts is limited unless you book a mega yacht. Crews recommend soft, collapsible luggage, as hard suitcases can be difficult to store. Keep packing simple to maximize space.

Clothing Recommendations

We suggest 2–3 swimsuits, 3–4 pairs of shorts, and 3–4 T-shirts. Pick up local clothing or crafts ashore if desired. For dinners, pack Caribbean casual attire. Light-soled deck shoes, flip-flops, or going barefoot on deck are preferred by yacht crews.

Sunscreen & Skincare

Bring SPF 30–45 sunscreen, higher SPF for children. Avoid spray types, which can make decks slippery. Tanning oils, PABA, and bronzers may stain upholstery and deck surfaces, so use caution when applying.

Seasickness on Charter Yachts

You don’t need to worry—Out of the Blue Yacht Charters recommends catamarans and motor yachts, where seasickness is uncommon. These yachts are heavy, sturdy, and designed for comfort, often feeling like a floating air mattress. Generally, the larger the yacht, the more stable it is.

Preventive Measures

It’s still a good idea to take preventive measures. Mild seasickness medication can help without causing drowsiness, allowing you to fully enjoy your cruise.

Alternative Remedies

Other useful options include ginger candies, adding ginger to meals, or wearing commercially available seasickness bracelets. With these precautions, most guests enjoy a smooth and relaxing sailing experience.

All-Inclusive Charters

If you book an all-inclusive yacht charter, all food and drinks are provided. In rare cases, a few extras may be your responsibility, but most preferences are discussed with your crew beforehand.

APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) Charters

For APA charters, your yacht is fully prepared when you step aboard. Cabins feature fresh sheets, covers, personal towels, and beach towels. En-suite bathrooms, or “heads,” are stocked with towels, soap, shampoo, and hairdryers. Many yachts include a stern platform with an outdoor shower for a refreshing “shower under the sky.”

Activities & Preferences

A variety of water toys are provided for your enjoyment. Before your charter, Out of the Blue Yacht Charters collects your food, drink, and activity preferences via a preference form. The crew ensures everything is supplied and ready, making your charter seamless and stress-free.

Valid passports with 6 months or more left on the expiration dates! Visas if required from your country of origin and the countries you travel through and where your cruise is taking place! Note: Valid passports are now required for all US Citizens coming into the Caribbean. European entry guidelines for American citizens are changing (Please discuss with your Broker)

Dress Codes in the Islands

Dress is casual in the islands. Resort-casual clothing is recommended if you plan to dine ashore at fancier restaurants. Onboard, it’s typically barefoot—shoes are not necessary unless you bring a specific pair with white soles, reserved only for the yacht.

We suggest packing flip-flops for shore visits and a pair of wet shoes for climbing rocks or wading in the water. During the winter season, bring a light sweater or windbreaker for cooler evenings.

For European charters, pack good walking shoes to explore cities and historic sites comfortably.

Travel

Out of the Blue Yacht Charters provides expert “how-to-get-there” guidance before you book your flights.

British Virgin Islands (BVI):

Fly into St. Thomas (STT) in the USVI, then take a 45-minute fast ferry to Road Town, Tortola, or depart directly from St. Thomas. You can also fly via San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) to Beef Island (EIS).

Leeward Islands:

Direct flights from New York or Miami reach St. Martin/Sint Maarten (SXM), Antigua (ANU), or St. Kitts (SKB). Inter-island commuter options are also available.

Windward Islands:

Direct flights from New York or Miami arrive in Grenada (GND) or St. Vincent (SVD).

Greece:

Most charters depart from Athens (ATH), which connects to nearly all islands.

Croatia:

International flights serve Split and Dubrovnik, with local transport to your yacht.

Boarding the Yacht

Out of the Blue Yacht Charters will coordinate with you closer to your boarding date, once your flight arrangements are confirmed. Some yachts only operate within the BVI and require a meet-and-greet there. If you prefer to meet in the USVI, we can make special arrangements—just let us know.

Standard pick-up and drop-off times are usually at 12:00 noon, unless other arrangements have been agreed upon with the yacht and crew. Our team ensures a smooth boarding experience, so you can start your charter stress-free and ready to enjoy your adventure.

Contact Information

We provide all important contact numbers and email addresses so you can share them with loved ones at home. Most yachts offer guest cell phones, while Wi-Fi and larger charter yachts may include satellite phones. Some of these services may incur additional charges.

Communications

In some destinations, cell phone access can be limited, especially when sailing between countries. Don’t worry—Out of the Blue Yacht Charters has extensive experience in these areas. Our team travels to these destinations regularly and can advise you on the best ways to maintain cellular and internet communications during your charter.

Diving Yachts

Ask us about our special diving yachts—perfect for unforgettable Caribbean diving holidays. These yachts feature captains and crews who are patient, professional, and PADI-certified instructors or dive masters. They can guide both beginners and experienced divers and even certify you as a PADI Open Water Diver during your charter.

Beginner Diving Options

New to scuba? Try a Resort Course or Discover Scuba Course. Jump directly off your yacht into warm, crystal-clear Caribbean waters and explore vibrant marine life without the crowds.

Rendezvous Diving

For non-dive yachts, rendezvous diving is often available, offering flexibility and adventure during your charter.

Regional Considerations

In destinations further south in the Caribbean or in the Mediterranean, including Greece and Croatia, diving may require a local dive operator.

Virgin Islands Diving

The Virgin Islands remain a top diving paradise, allowing you to dive directly from your yacht. Contact us to plan your private yacht diving adventure today.

The Yacht – Family Charters

Yachts warmly welcome families and little ones on board. For safety, children must wear a life vest at all times while on deck. It’s best to bring a fitted, comfortable, and fun vest they’ll enjoy wearing.

Activities for Kids

Bring age-appropriate games, DVDs, and their own well-fitting mask and snorkel for water play. Some yachts even offer PADI Bubble Maker programs, letting kids safely experience diving under supervision. Check our Diving section for more details.

Important Note

Please note that yacht crew cannot provide babysitting during your family charter. Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising children at all times.

Fishing in the Caribbean

In most Caribbean areas, fishing is allowed, but in BVI waters, a fishing license is required. This can be obtained online—ask us for guidance.

Safety Considerations

Be aware that reef fish may contain Ciguatera toxin, which can cause severe illness. For this reason, we do not recommend eating local reef fish. Offshore fishing reduces this risk.

Catch-and-Release Policy

Fishing on charter is generally catch-and-release only, unless your captain confirms the fish is safe to eat. Always follow your crew’s guidance to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Snorkel & Dive Gear

Most yachts come fully equipped with modern snorkeling gear to ensure an unforgettable and active underwater experience. It’s always a good idea to bring your own mask for the best fit and comfort, but many yachts provide everything you need.

Before your trip, let Out of the Blue Yacht Charters know your shoe size and gear preferences on your preference sheet so the crew can prepare properly. Most yachts include masks, snorkels, and fins for your adventures.

For scuba enthusiasts, dive gear can be rented or is included on yachts that specialize in scuba diving.

Your Crew

Your charter crew wears many hats during your voyage. They ensure your safety, prepare gourmet meals, guide island excursions, teach diving, and maintain the yacht. While you sleep, they prepare breakfast and ready the yacht, so your day begins with fresh coffee and calm seas.

Charter crews often work around the clock, with only brief turnarounds between charters. Despite their busy schedules, they maintain a warm, relaxed, and professional atmosphere so you always feel at ease and cared for.

Crew Gratuity

Gratuity is typically 15–20% of the yacht’s charter rate, similar to other service industries, and remains at your discretion. The MYBA (Mediterranean) recommends 10–15%, while the CYBA (Caribbean) suggests 15–20%.

Tips are usually given to the captain at the end of your charter and shared among the crew, often with a personal note. Your generosity is deeply appreciated and reflects outstanding service and hospitality.

Insurance

Trip insurance is always a good idea and peace of mind for all your travels. Inquire with your broker for insurance options
